Primary PM impacts were much higherin urban centres than in rural areas for both the summer and winter. Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) due to anthropogenic VOC emissions were a small contributor to modelled PM2•S concentrations on both summer and winter days during the episodes. Fig. 4 and 5 show the sulphate decreases resulting from a 50% reduction in S02 emissions. Sulphate concentrations were reduced by 40 to 50% over most of the domain on July 14th• The fixed concentrations at the inflow boundaries result in much smaller percentage reductions in theseareas.

In both cases N03 is high, but the magnitude is much better with half ammonia emissions. NH4 corresponds well with observations. PMIO is slightly low, and PM2s is high by comparison with the observations. Modelled sulphate concentrations correlate with observed data but are somewhat lower than the measurements. Scatter plots for S02 and N02 give good correlations between modelled and observed concentrations, but the modelled S02 is high by about 50%. Modelled N02 concentrations are highly correlated with measured data and show very little bias.
