I have not tried to gain entry into newsrooms for a few years, and I have less knowledge of the climate in other parts of the world, but I can’t help but think that the difficulty of gaining access tracks, more or less, with the economic fortunes of these companies. Of course, online news sites do not have the same sense of impending doom. However, their financial situation is often as tenuous, if not more, than that of mainstream newsrooms.
Born’s (2011) update of Schlesinger’s study of the BBC is perhaps the richest of the lot. She spent parts of several years conducting fieldwork. Anderson’s (2013) work on the Philadelphia news ecosystem consisted of about seven months during one year (2008) in the field. The most recent book to come out, Usher’s (2014) examination of the New York Times, is based on five months of research conducted in 2010. Except for the rare exception, it appears that scholars are spending less and less time in the field spread over fewer and fewer years.
A few studies appeared in the 1990s, most notably Pedelty’s (1995) examination of foreign correspondents and Jacobs’ (2000) study of race and media in Los Angeles.
